The long and lovely sandy beach which caught Captain Cook’s eye and now carries his name, is today a modern beach resort and shopping center. The beach is safe for swimming and the adjacent Purangi estuary has sheltered water with an excellent trailer boat launching area. Lonely Bay (walk down from the Shakespeare Cliff Reserve) is a highlight of the area.
